A list of some important events taking place in Royal Deeside is given below. Where available, contact information has been included. When information is incomplete then more may be available from the local Tourist Information Office. Events will be added as details are confirmed.

The events listed vary in size even though we have omitted many smaller events taking place throughout the year. More information on these events may be available in Events Guide 2. Importantly, visitors are welcome to join in most activities taking place in Royal Deeside. Both Balmoral and Mar Lodge support many events through the summer and their programmes are also given separately

Balmoral grounds gardens and exhibitions open to the public along with the Highland Games Exhibition which is new for 2008. There will also be a falconry display by the North East Falconry Centre. See www.balmoralcastle.com for details.

Balmoral Luxury Land Rover Tours - Daily vehicle tours.
A unique opportunity to view native Scottish wildlife in the manicured parkland, pristine pine forest and open moorland and mountains of Balmoral Estate.

Balmoral Woodland Walks – every Wednesday from April 2nd to July 30th.
Discover the grounds and woods around Balmoral Castle. Learn about the estate’s history and wildlife. Meeting point: Balmoral Carriage Exhibition. Time: 2-4pm.

Balmoral Children’s Events.
Join the Rangers on the first Monday of every month from April to July, for exciting nature activities, pond dipping, games etc. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Saturday 12th April 10.00am – 9.30pm - FABULOUS FROGS AND LOVELY LIZARDS
Following on from last years success we are again offering the chance for people to join us in the National Amphibian and Reptile Recording Scheme (NARRS) surveys run by The Herpetological Conservation Trust (HCT) - for details and to sign up to take part visit www.narrs.org.uk.
Volunteer to carry out surveys in your local area and find out how to identify different species and habitats. This will involve an indoor session and field visits including one evening visit. Please bring outdoor wear, a packed lunch and money for an evening meal plus a torch for our evening session.

Friday 25th April – Birds before breakfast.
An excellent opportunity to observe the courtship rituals of the black grouse from the luxury of a Land Rover Discovery. Meeting point: Spittal of Glen Muick visitor centre. Time: 6:00am-8:30am. Cost: £5 per person. Booking essential, limited places available.

Monday 5th of May – Celebrate the dawn chorus.
Join a Ranger for an early morning stroll around the woods listening to and learning about birdsong, which is at its peak at this time of year. All birds recorded will be used to help compile the new British Trust for Ornithology National Bird Atlas.

Learn how to identify butterflies & contribute records to Butterfly Conservation’s national recording schemes & the North East Scotland Biological Records Centre (NESBReC). Suitable for beginners or improvers, the day will include a presentation on Scottish species & visits to local sites, where spring butterflies such as priority species Pearl-bordered Fritillary should be on the wing. Sunday 18th May A B £ E GLEN TANAR CIRCULAR (9 miles)
Bus leaves Gordon House at 8.30am and returns at approx. 4pm.
Landranger map No 44 Ballater
This circular walk starts at the car park at Braeloin in Glen Tanar. It rises gently over the Firmounth Road, an ancient cross country route, and into one of the few remnants of the old Caledonian Pine Forest for which this area is famous. From here the path leads round the Strone and descends by the Water of Allachy to the Water of Tanar, past Glen Tanar House and the end of the walk. Mountain / Day A gradual climb by path and rough moorland to the summit of
Carn na Criche, then on to the Corbett of Carn na Drochaide,

Monday 26th of May – Watch the birdie.
Assist the rangers as they undertake a survey of the birds in Glen Muick. The results of the survey will be used to help compile the new National Bird Atlas. Training provided.

Saturday 7th of June – Mending our ways.
Come and join the rangers as they repair the damage caused by hundreds of thousands of trampling feet on some of Scotland’s most popular paths. Take part in a day of practical conservation action in spectacular scenery. All tools and training provided.

Annual event where stallholders dress up to raise money for various causes. Entertainment throughout the day.

A one-day food and drink festival.

Saturday 7th June to Saturday 21st June - 'Between Heaven and Earth' a Celebration of the Cairngorm Landscape. An exhibition of photography, painting and mixed media. Sunday 8th June - Opening of Stonehaven Open Air Swimming Pool - 10am.
The heated outdoor swimming pool opens for its 75th season.

Sunday 8th of June – Scotland’s Tenth North East Classic Commercial Vehicle Road Run
The rally will arrive in Ballater from 10.30am onwards and depart around 12 noon. Ballater Pipe Band and Fiona Brandie School of Highland Dancing will be in attendance and there will be a burger stall if you're feeling a bit peckish.

Huge range of events including continental markets, local business showcase, dog show, ferret racing and of course the Charities Village.

Sun. 29th June Mar Lodge Estate 8.00am - 8.30pm A Walk on the Wild Side: The Lairig Ghru.
Mountain / Day A long, strenuous walk through this high Cairngorm pass.
Discover the secrets of the Cairngorms on this historic route.
Transport will be provided back to Mar Lodge.

Sunday 29th June A B £ S BALMORAL FOREST AND BALLOCHBUIE FOREST (8 miles)
Landranger Map No 44 Ballater
Bus leaves Gordon House at 8.30am and returns at approx. 4pm.
This walk is a mixture of superb open hillside and woodland. It starts near Balmoral Castle and proceeds via the Dubh-chlais onto the track up Glen Gelder for Lochnagar to the south. Then heading west over rocky moorland it descends into lovely Ballochbuie Forest before crossing the River Dee. This route offers a good chance to see red deer, red grouse, and if you are really lucky, the elusive capercaillie. Cost: £14. MEET: at Gordon House, Blackhall Road, Inverurie. Come along and enjoy free access to one of the north-east’s most picturesque castles. For the first time, Braemar Castle is taking part in the annual “Doors Open Day” and visitors will pay nothing to view the 12 furnished rooms on display.There will also be an opportunity to see how the villagers of Braemar would have dressed and lived at the time of the Jacobite uprisings. Jacobite enthusiasts, Michel and Magali Brat will set up camp (weather permitting) in the castle grounds wearing the costumes of the time and cooking on an open fire. Children will be invited to dress up and find out how it felt to be a Jacobite in the 1700s and to view the exquisite replica swords made by Michel. Teas, coffees and home bakes will be on sale in the grounds - a day out for all the family amid the autumn splendour of Deeside. Parking is available in the car park adjoining the Castle grounds.

The Anna Massie Band was named Best Folk Band at the 2006 Scots Trad Music Awards and Anna was the winner of the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2003 Award. A talented multi-instrumentalist, she excels in playing the fiddle, guitar, mandolin and tenor banjo. Along with Anna, The Anna Massie Band comprise the impressive guitar and vocal talents of Jenn Butterworth and the outstanding accordion and border pipe playing of Mairearad Green. Lauren MacColl learned fiddle through the Feisean movement of Gaelic arts in Ross-Shire. Bus leaves Gordon House at 8.30am and returns at approx. 4pm.

This walk starts in Strathdon below Ben Newe. It immediately crosses the River Don and climbs over the shoulder of Clachcurr by the Glac of Barns, then by way of Tom Beith, south to Siliken and on to Gallows Hill. The descent over Baderonoch takes us near the beautiful Tillypronie House, the grounds of which are open to the public twice a year. Originally formed by Charlie McKerron (Capercaillie) as an album project, Session A9 are now thrilling audiences throughout the UK. McKerron works with a pool of musicians including fiddlers Kevin Henderson (Boys of the Lough) and Gordon Gunn and Adam Sutherland (Peatbog Faeries), with Kris Drever on vocals and guitar, Tim Edey on guitar and melodeon, Brian McAlpine on keyboards and Iain Copeland on percussion.
