LIZARDS
Following on from last years success we are again offering the chance
for people to join us in the National Amphibian and Reptile Recording
Scheme (NARRS) surveys run by The Herpetological Conservation Trust (HCT)
- for details and to sign up to take part visit www.narrs.org.uk.
Volunteer to carry out surveys in your local area and find out how to
identify different species and habitats. This will involve an indoor session
and field visits including one evening visit. Please bring outdoor wear,
a packed lunch and money for an evening meal plus a torch for our evening
session.

Bus leaves Gordon House at 8.30am and returns at approx. 4pm.
Landranger map No 44 Ballater
This circular walk starts at the car park at Braeloin in Glen Tanar. It
rises gently over the Firmounth Road, an ancient cross country route,
and into one of the few remnants of the old Caledonian Pine Forest for
which this area is famous. From here the path leads round the Strone and
descends by the Water of Allachy to the Water of Tanar, past Glen Tanar

Bus leaves Gordon House at 8.30am and returns at approx. 4pm.
This walk is a mixture of superb open hillside and woodland. It starts
near Balmoral Castle and proceeds via the Dubh-chlais onto the track up
Glen Gelder for Lochnagar to the south. Then heading west over rocky moorland
it descends into lovely Ballochbuie Forest before crossing the River Dee.
This route offers a good chance to see red deer, red grouse, and if you
are really lucky, the elusive capercaillie. Cost: £14. MEET: at

Nine Stanes of Mulloch, returning by another route through the forest.

September, 10am to 4pm - Braemar Castle Open Day.
Come along and enjoy free access to one of the north-east’s most
picturesque castles. For the first time, Braemar Castle is taking part
in the annual “Doors Open Day” and visitors will pay nothing
to view the 12 furnished rooms on display.There will also be an opportunity
to see how the villagers of Braemar would have dressed and lived at the
time of the Jacobite uprisings. Jacobite enthusiasts, Michel and Magali
Brat will set up camp (weather permitting) in the castle grounds wearing
the costumes of the time and cooking on an open fire. Children will be
invited to dress up and find out how it felt to be a Jacobite in the 1700s
and to view the exquisite replica swords made by Michel. Teas, coffees
and home bakes will be on sale in the grounds - a day out for all the
family amid the autumn splendour of Deeside. Parking is available in the
car park adjoining the Castle grounds.

APRIL – THE ANNA MASSIE BAND - Support from Lauren MacColl
The Anna Massie Band was named Best Folk Band at the 2006 Scots Trad Music
Awards and Anna was the winner of the BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional
Musician of the Year 2003 Award. A talented multi-instrumentalist, she
excels in playing the fiddle, guitar, mandolin and tenor banjo. Along
with Anna, The Anna Massie Band comprise the impressive guitar and vocal
talents of Jenn Butterworth and the outstanding accordion and border pipe
playing of Mairearad Green. Lauren MacColl learned fiddle through the
Feisean movement of Gaelic arts in Ross-Shire. At the age of 16 she was
one of the youngest semi-finalists in the BBC Scotland Young Traditional
Musician of the Year and gigged with all-girl band Dochas in Ireland.

Bus leaves Gordon House at 8.30am and returns at approx. 4pm.
Landranger map No 37 Strathdon.
This walk starts in Strathdon below Ben Newe. It immediately crosses the
River Don and climbs over the shoulder of Clachcurr by the Glac of Barns,
then by way of Tom Beith, south to Siliken and on to Gallows Hill. The
descent over Baderonoch takes us near the beautiful Tillypronie House,
the grounds of which are open to the public twice a year. Great views
over both Donside and Deeside on this fairly easy walk. Cost: £14

Gathering legions of new fans wherever they go, indie pop band Aberfeldy’s
multi-layered, pop-driven tunes have been likened to Squeeze and Prefab
Sprout. They supported R.E.M. at Loch Lomond and Blondie and the Scissor
Sisters at Hogmanay in Edinburgh 2004, and in 2006 they toured with The
Beautiful South, James Blunt and Paolo Nutini. Support is from Finniston.

FRIDAY 18TH MAY – WOODEND BARN, BANCHORY Session A9
Originally formed by Charlie McKerron (Capercaillie) as an album project,
Session A9 are now thrilling audiences throughout the UK. McKerron works
with a pool of musicians including fiddlers Kevin Henderson (Boys of the
Lough) and Gordon Gunn and Adam Sutherland (Peatbog Faeries), with Kris
Drever on vocals and guitar, Tim Edey on guitar and melodeon, Brian McAlpine
on keyboards and Iain Copeland on percussion. The live shows have earned
the Session A9 musicians the title "Scotland's Supergroup" and
they are one of the most exciting live acts in the UK today. Doors 7.30
