Royal Deeside :
History with Boots On walks

Walkers on Royal Deeside can now have their experience enhanced. Lovers of local history can also enjoy a new adventure. For local history and delightful country walks have now been combined in a series of delightful walks in the beautiful surroundings of the eastern Cairngorms National Park.

Five walks have been established near Ballater leading to sites of historic interest. A brochure has been published which not only contains directions for the walks but also contains information on the history of sites which can be visited. Those following the paths will find waymarkers and interpretive panels with more information and sketches of how the site might have looked in time gone by. A book entitled “History with Boots On” containing much more information has also been published. Both the brochure and book can be purchased from the VisitScotland Tourist Information Centres.

A sample of what's in store

On Walk 5, tread the ground where the McGregor men gathered to prepare for the Battle of Culloden.

Walk 3b leads you to “The Field of two Goats” at Auchtavan.

Walk 4 takes you to an ancient Clan Donald Estate with an ancient Mausoleum.

Find the remains of an ancient village and Smithy on Walk 3a.

The well known Seven Bridges walk is also included, together with a lovely stroll along the old railway line, taking in a former settlement at Torphantrick, just over the bridge at CambusO’May on Walk 2.

Thanks: The project was managed by Ballater (RD) Ltd. It was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Aberdeenshire Council, Scottish Natural Heritage, the former Cairngorms Partnership and Scottish Enterprise to whom BRD is most grateful. The co-operation of Landowners and Farmers has also been most appreciated.

The Upper Deeside Access Trust have installed new gates, waymarkers and interpretive panels as part of the project. The beautiful sketches and illustrations for the book and brochure were prepared by Alan Baldwin Creative Design Consultants.

But remember to take care. Your visit to Royal Deeside would not be complete without discovering this local heritage but always be prepared with suitable clothing and stout footwear. Take care when walking on main roads. Keep your dog under close control and don’t light fires.
