Draft Programme
The Steering Group are organising explanatory literature and an exhibition in Ballater for Summer 2000 loaned from the Outlook Tower in Edinburgh and from artists who appreciate Geddes' work. These activities are to help raise awareness locally and further afield about Geddes' work, and events, still to be planned, leading up to the Commemoration in 2004. Possible additional events include an Scottish Natural Heritage Activity Day at Burn 'O Vat including Geddes material. The Project has already achieved the naming of a street of new housing approved for Ballater in honour of Sir Patrick Geddes.
 

Basic Goals

  • to raise awareness of:
    • Patrick Geddes and his work.
    • Art and Architecture of Geddes' time and the present.
    • The local environment and environmental issues.
    • Town Planning Issues.

  • To create a higher profile for Ballater and Ballater Environmental Education Centre.

  •  
  • To increase community pride in local history, co-operative working and environment.

  •  
  • To increase residents' skills in art, design and environmental stewardship.

  •  
  • To produce information and education materials which will contribute to lasting awareness of the Project and its themes, and stimulate future activities.

  •  
  • To commission contemporary artworks in and around Ballater which relate to the principles of Geddes.

  • The Environmental Centre in particular seeks to:

    • Add a further dimension to its programme, particularly in the filed of lifelong learning and adult groups.
    • Provide a focus for the Geddes Project and exhibits in Ballater.
    • Devise additional units of work for its school courses.
Potential Activities

Arts

  • Research - involvement of local historians and residents in collation of details, leading to production of displays, pamphlets.
  • Exhibitions - throughout Project, display of project plans, interpretative panels, local workshop results, artists' designs for project, contemporary and historical art from France, India and Scotland. Potential venues include Ballater Environmental Education Centre, Victoria and Albert Halls etc.
  • Skills training - stoneworking, environmental art and landscape design, architectural design, website design and creation, videography, desk-top publishing, exhibition design.
  • Hands-on experiences - workshops/courses for all age groups involving above skills and themes or challenges which suit the current phase of the project. Also, lectures in the Environmental Education Centre, library or local halls, school projects and exchanges with French, Indian Schools, intensive workshops with visiting artists or experts, music and drama workshops, videography workshops.
  • Art in the environment - create temporary and/or permanent structures/plantings to recognise the project, community and Geddes.
  • Collaboration - to encourage the local artistic community to work collectively in Ballater.
  • Documentation - produce videos, pamphlets, website, education materials to record the Project and inspire further activities.
Library
  • Displays of Geddes' writtings and associated literature.
  • Readings and lectures on appropriate materials/topics.
Schools
  • Cross curricular projects involving art, science, geography, English; international exchanges via internet, video diaries, letters; public displays and performances; outdoor projects.
Environmental
  • Raise awareness and action via creation of new walks, gardens, plantings, conservation measures.
  • Create educational materials for schools, rangers, and field centre use.
  • Conduct workshops, walks, projects
  • Develop Ballater Environmental Education Centre as a focus for study of the life and works of Patrick Geddes

Goals of publication:
1. to introduce Patrick Geddes and his work to Ballater and its visitors.
2. to outline the Ballater Geddes Project - general details, specific events through 2000.
3. to start viewers considering their own environments/activities/societies along Geddesian principles.
4. to accompany/interpret the art exhibition.

Goals

2. to highlight Geddes's activities/interests in aesthetics.
3. to illustrate how contemporary artists respond to Geddesian principles - aesthetic or otherwise.
4. to outline the Ballater Geddes Project - possibly linking exhibits to related upcoming events.
5. to start viewers considering their own environments/activities/societies along Geddesian principles.
6. The Exhibition will be launched by keynote speakers.
