Village Panorama

The handsome Victorian church of St Moluag with it’s beautiful rosary window, designed by Douglas Strachan, was erected in 1870 and provides an impressive backdrop to the Golf Course. This excellent nine hole course is overlooked by Alastrean House, currently a residential retirement home for ex members of the RAF.

Activities

Tarland can offer a great range and variety of sporting pursuits and activities for the visitor throughout the seasons. For the golfing enthusiast we have a superb Golf Course which has been recognised as “the best 9 hole course in Scotland”. Choose from a large selection of low level scenic walks or head for the heights and enjoy the stunning views over Donside, Deeside and beyond. Naturalists of all ages will enjoy an abundance of contrasting habitats and diverse natural history.

Tarland has a rich history of settlement and sites of historic and prehistoric interest. Visit the Earth House at Culsh, thought to be an Iron Age store room once attached to a round house. Park at Tomnaverie, walk up to the recumbent stone circle and experience the spectacular view of Lochnagar between the stones flanking the recumbent.

These are sold locally and are much in demand. Informal excursions are organised to local sites of interest. Many of our members were involved in the excavation and conservation of Tomnaverie carried out by Reading University in conjunction with Historic Scotland and The MacRobert Trust. As part of the CSA Scottish Archaeology Month, we have regularly lead excursions to local areas of historical and prehistorical importance. This has attracted people from far and wide. From October to April in conjunction with the University of Aberdeen a series of lectures on broadly historical topics is well attended, open to all and very popular.
