Tarland is a most attractive village 30 miles west of Aberdeen with its village square constructed in the North East vernacular style overlooked by an impressive granite war memorial. It is located on the B9119, a quiet and scenic route from the city and can also be approached from Aboyne via the B9004, passing Tomnaverie Stone Circle. It nestles at the centre of The Howe O’ Cromar, close to the boundary of the Cairngorms National Park. This natural hollow of land on the eastern edge of the Grampian mountains between the rivers Dee and Don is an area of exceptional beauty in a very special corner of North East Scotland.

From ‘The Queen’s View’ explore the area’s wonderfully varied landscapes, appreciate the hills Lochnagar, Morven and Mount Keen. Absorb the vista with ever changing panoramic views and quality of light whilst pondering over its historic and pre-historic sites which reveal a history of settlement and farming stretching back more than four thousand years.

Unlike many of the surrounding villages Tarland has The Square at its centre. A finely sculpted granite war memorial of a Gordon Highlander is the focal point. Around the Square are granite houses and shops which together with two hotels provide essentials for the visitor. The MacRobert Hall hosts community events. East of the Square, framed by lime trees, is the ruined church of 1762 overlooking the kirkyard.

The handsome Victorian church of St Moluag with it’s beautiful rosary window, designed by Douglas Strachan, was erected in 1870 and provides an impressive backdrop to the Golf Course. This excellent nine hole course is overlooked by Alastrean House, currently a residential retirement home.
