Events coming to Royal Deeside

January 1 2009

Apart from skiing, the winter tends to be a quiet period where much work is done on planning the events for later in the year. However, winter does have a special flavour in Royal Deeside as the pictures below help to illustrate. We can expect similar scenes during the next three months.

Curling at Ballater

Hogmanay 2008: Curlers take advantage of the icy conditions to enjoy a session of outdoor curling. Note the low angle of the sun. The brooms are used to sweep the ice ahead of the incoming (curling) stone. The stones are heavier than those used at indoor rinks because the ice surface is less even.

Sunset, Ballater Golf Course

Same time same place : I have turned to take a picture of the sun setting over the golf course. The course is covered by a layer of frost.

Enchanted Glen, Aboyne

Boules was adopted by some Ballater residents as an alternative for when the weather is not cold enough for curling
